On the evening of October 28, the Third Global Computer Science Development Forum kicked off, both online and offline, in the reception hall of the main building of Tsinghua University, and was broadcast live in bilingual to the world. Chen Yuan, Vice Chairman of the 12th Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, addressed the forum via video. Wang Hongwei, Vice President of Tsinghua University, attended and addressed the forum. The forum was hosted by Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, President of Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences and Turing Award winner, and Yin Xia, Director of Computer Department. Themed "Challenges and Opportunities for Computer Science in the New Era", the forum was attended by chairmen (deans) of computer department of dozens of well-known universities at home and abroad, including University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Camb ridge, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Also present at the forum were main leaders of relevant departments, Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences, School of Software, Institute for Network Sciences and Cyberspace, Department of Electronics, Department of Automation, School of Integrated Circuits, Institute for AI Industry Research and all the members of the Party and government team of the Computer Department. More than 7,000 scholars at home and abroad watched the live video.
Video Speech by Chen Yuan
Chen Yuan said it is of great significance for Tsinghua University, in the face of profound changes unseen in a century, to actively build a global platform for friendly exchanges in computer science, as part of its efforts to build an open, shared and united computer science community. He hoped that the forum can build consensus on the development of computer science, explore new ways of cultivating computer science talents, and provide a useful reference for the development goals, models and quality of the global computer science. He called for efforts to explore the nature of computer science and promote the "connotative" development of computer science; to enrich the "extensional" development concept of computer science, make good use of the "catalyst" of interdisciplinary integration, promote interdisciplinary integration and collaborative innovation; to gradually improve the talent training mechanism of computer science featuring "connotative" development and "extensional" development, and plan the training system of computer science talents in an all-round way.
Speech by Wang Hongwei
Wang Hongwei warmly congratulated the forum on its successful convening. He said that global cooperation and joint efforts are central to the development of computer science, and that the forum offers a good opportunity for peers at home and abroad to discuss computer science theories, discuss the training of high-quality personnel, and promote the development of computer science worldwide. He hoped for participants to fully exchange ideas, enhance mutual understanding, and formulate planning for the development of computer science that is more forward-looking and of broader global vision.
Speech by Andrew Chi-Chih Yao
Yao shared his views on the forum theme. He said that never before has computer science registered so rapid development, that new era and new situation have brought us more opportunities and challenges, and that the global challenges and confusion call for concerted efforts of practitioners engaged in computer teaching and research. He hoped for there to be strengthened exchanges and intensified efforts among colleges to promote the prosperity of computer science.
Exchanges and Discussion among Experts and Scholars
Heads of the computer science department from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Cambridge, and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and the academic dean of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology delivered keynote speeches on the future development of computer science, the improvement and exploration of the training mechanism of computer science talents, and interdisciplinary integration of computer related disciplines. The interaction concluded with a symposium on "The Development Trend of Computer Science in the New Era" between Yao and the four keynote speakers.
Hosted by Yin Xia
The Global Computer Science Development Forum, a high-level international forum for discipline development hosted by Tsinghua University, aims to explore the nature of computer science and drive the development of global computer science. In September 2018, as the Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua University ushered in the 60th anniversary of its establishment, Tsinghua University held the "First Global Computer Science Development Forum". The Second Global Computer Science Forum was successfully held in September 2021, where the chairs (deans) of the computer science department from MIT, Imperial College London, and National University of Singapore gave keynote speeches on the mission and responsibility of computer science, attracting the attention of computer scholars all over the world.
