The Second Global Forum on Development of Computer Science

On the evening of September 17, the Second Global Forum on Development of Computer Science was held in the reception hall of the main building of Tsinghua University in the form of online and offline, and was live-streamed to the world bilingually. Chen Yuan, Vice Chairman of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of the Computer Science Advisory Committee of Tsinghua University, Yang Bin, Vice Chancellor and Academic Dean of Tsinghua University, delivered speeches to the forum through video, and  Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, winner of the Turing Award and Dean of the Institute for Interdisciplinary  Information Sciences, Tsinghua University, attended the forum and delivered a speech. The forum was presided over by Yin Xia, Director of the Department of Computer Science and Technology.

Chen Yuan pointed out that computer science is the most active knowledge field with the fastest development and the widest influence nowadays, which not only changed the way of human production and life, but also had a huge impact on the research paradigm of mathematical science, engineering technology, humanities and arts and other disciplines. He hoped that through this forum, we would explore how to build a high-level computer discipline, promote the development of global computer discipline, and adhere to open cooperation and mutual learning and mutual recognition together to play a positive role in serving the national economy and people's livelihood and serving the survival and development of all mankind.

Yang Bin delivers a video speech

Yang Bin pointed out that the impact of computer science is global, and the development of   computer science requires global cooperation and mutual efforts. It was hoped that through this forum, workers engaged in computer teaching and scientific research could fully exchange ideas, strengthen cooperation, and make a more global and forward-looking plan for the development of the computer discipline.

Andrew Chi-Chih Yao delivers a speech

Andrew Chi-Chih Yao said computer science is a discipline that needs to be continuously adapted to and developed with the help of technological evolution. In the past 30 years, Tsinghua University established institutions including the Institute for Network Sciences and Cyberspace, School of Software, Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences and Quantum Computing Laboratory in response to the rapid development of the Internet, software design and computer interdisciplinary science and other fields. These emerging institutions faced a series of challenges in development and construction, and he hoped that colleges and universities could strengthen communication and cooperation, jointly cope with global challenges, and strive to promote the development of the computer discipline.

The forum was organized under the theme of "Mission and Responsibility of Computer Science". The directors of computer departments or deans of computer schools from 11 well-known overseas universities, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, National University of Singapore, Keio University of Japan, and 21 high-level domestic universities, including Peking University, Zhejiang University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and University of Electronic Science and Technology of China attended the forum.

Communication and discussions

The deans of computer science schools from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, and the National University of Singapore gave keynote speeches on the future development direction of computer science and the challenges and opportunities of computer science personnel training. Afterwards, the experts and scholars further discussed the role and orientation of computer science in the university development strategy, the trend and challenges of the future development of computer science, and the way to cultivate the creativity and new skills of computer science students.

The Global Forum on Development of Computer Science is a high-level international forum  on discipline development held by Tsinghua University. The forum seeks to promote exchanges among international computer schools and departments, unite the consensus on the development of computer discipline, and make positive contributions to promoting the development of global computer science and the progress of information-sharing technology for all mankind.
